Health-related Offers Improvement

KiwiEat: A gamified App for improving eating habits

   - DESIGN BRIEF -

Competitors with a strong health offer have outperformed the market year over year, increasing their new sales revenue & market share of new sales. Other competitors with more basic health offerings are gaining traction in the market. Without a targeted offering in this space BT are at risk of being left behind. Therefore, the design challenge is
How might we provide services that are engaging and improve the wellbeing of our customers?

RESEARCH REVIEW

COMPETITOR ANALYSIS :What Are the Existing Programs in Market?

AIA insurance company provides an award-winning program by encouraging them to do health assessments such as mental/dental/fitness assessments to know their health, offering rewards when they live a healthy life like taking enough sports. MLC  insurance company promotes the customers to walk more and achieve their step targets. If they can reach the annual target, they’ll maintain a 5% discount for the next year.

They usually use rewards like discounts or redeemed merchandises to attract people to do more exercise or submit their body data positively. And when they are designing the reward points system, they used a lot of psychological techniques like gamification/user levels to increase the engagement in this process. Sometimes they collaborate with some third parties, such as medical centers, gyms, and other popular tracking Apps. In other words, the users can enjoy the corresponding services at a lower price and they are more willing to share their private data with the insurance companies.

However, they barely focus on human's nutrition and eating. This angle can be explore more to verify its feasibility.

PICKING UP THE PIECES: Why Put Eating into BT’s Health Program?

• Eating is always a popular topic which is tightly related to health. If people are under the poor diet in a long-term, they may suffer from many kinds of the diseases which might result in implicated death.

• How many Australians meet the
Australian Dietary Guidelines published by the government? From the national survey conducted in 2011-2012,  the result was absolutely not satisfactory. Most people cannot intake enough nutrition by eating these five main categories of food – vegetables, dairy, meats, grains, and fruits. The lack of vegetables is the most severe. This terrible situation needs improving immediately.

• The good news is that the public awareness of eating healthy and balanced food has been increased day by day.  From the official statistics, 11% of the Australians are on a diet for losing weight or for other health reasons (Australian Health Survey: Nutrition – Supplements, 2011-12). More and more people start to do food journal or accept nutrition education to improve their eating. They have been aware of how important their diet is and they are trying to improve it as possible as they can. Therefore, in this case, they might need more professional guidance and warm-hearted support.

• Although most insurance companies in Australia haven’t paid much attention to it, many insurance companies overseas like Jonh Hancockr® have made a success by rewarding people when they buy healthy food. This demonstrates eating-related area is worthwhile exploring.

DISCOVERY: What’s the user needs?

Picture
user research details
We observed more than 100 customers' behaviors in grocery shops and restaurants.
We interviewed 20 persons separately.
I found national reports from the government and research reports from pioneers.
I analyzed the feedbacks from the users of related Apps/products online.

Through these four aspects above, USER NEEDS can be concluded:

1. To know what they are eating:
     •    easy-to-understand comparison of packaged foods
    •    reliable healthy rating

2. To know what they should eat:
    •   personalized nutrition guides
     •   whether their diet is balanced
    •    abundant, juicy, easy recipes suitable for the whole family

IDEATION AND FURTHER RESEARCH

According to user needs, we come up with many solutions to these issues.
For instance, we can provide the all-round food management (concept 1): after you scan the shopping receipt, you will be rewarded if you bought healthy food. It will analyze what you bought and give you evaluation report, also generate recipes automatically, helping you to plan the meals. It will remind you of the expiry dates of food. Besides, the food you bought this time can be added into the shopping list.
Another example (concept 2) is that after you scan the receipt, the food on it will be transferred to your virtual pets' food, and the health condition of your pet can directly reflect your choice of food. If you eat too much meat, your pet will tell you he wants more
vegetables. Rewards in reality can be provided if you can keep your pet fit.

                                                        Concept 1                                                                                                                                   Concept 2

Final Concept:Photo-recognition + Gamified pet system

Combined with BT' requirements, we decided our final plan as below:
Using photo recognition technology to help users to do food journal and get the nutrition data simply. Based on the Australian Dietary Guidelines, everyone has a recommended number of daily nutrition intake. So the core of this solution is one parameter we create, DPI (Dietary Pattern Index). If they can achieve their daily goal, the DPI will plus one, on the contrary, the DPI will minus one.

Besides, everyone has a virtual pet whose appearance is decided by the DPI. If DPI decreases, the pet would become more ugly since the owner feeds them with the imbalanced or unhealthy food. But if it increases, the user can get 3 magic points which can be consumed to change your or your friends’s pet’s appearance.

Thus in order to get the chance to play tricks on friends or recover their  poor little pet, the users may try harder to meet the nutrition target.

Supplementary Research Summary

  • What Other Food Apps did?
           1. help to buy healthier food
           2. guide to make healthy homemade food
           3. guide to healthy restaurants
           4. tracking and coaching
           ...
  • Does gamification work well?
“When you accomplish a goal, your brain releases dopamine and serotoninTrusted Source. That’s why crossing that item off feels so good. It’s also
why some people get addicted to video games: It’s the same neurochemical cocktail responsible for drug addiction.“  (
Katherine, 2018)

  • Is photo-recognition technology reliable?
Scientists came up with a newly defined deep convolutional neural network architecture, called NutriNet. They achieved a classification accuracy
of 86.72% on 225,953 images of 520 different food and drink items.  along with an accuracy of 94.47% on a detection dataset
containing 130,517
          images (Mezgec, 2017).

  • Will social media influence people's eating habits?
Social media has been widely adopted by people in recent years, consequently health researchers are looking for ways to utilize this kind of
engagement with social media to deliver health intervention. They have done a lot of studies to explore the relationship between social media
intervention and positive nutrition behaviors. What they have found is People appear to be open to receiving healthy eating tips through social
media, and social media can be a potential tool to facilitate and support healthier choices (
Klassen, 2018).

CHRACTER DESIGN

It is hard to choose something as our main character. But since we are making an App about healthy eating, we hope it can make people think of health when they see it, although animals like kitten, puppy, panda, and penguin are so lovely and cute. We have a bunch of options such as kiwi, avocado, lemon. But now is the season for Kiwi which is so popular in Australia and New Zealand, so we wanted to try to sketch one about it.

For the further character visual design, we have two directions. One is to add more accessories when DPI increases. Another one is to make the pet hideous: shorter, bigger and with more pimple. In the future development, I hope to create more characters, not only the kiwi, for users to draw and choose. It would be more fun and interesting.

USER EVALUATION AND ITERATION

• THINK-ALOUD (users*12)

• SUS Questionnaire  (score: 90)

• Cognitive Walkthrough

• Heuristic Evaluation
details

Based on the feedback from users, we filtered and selected a few points to improve.

1. Information group

The information in the same type should be put together. For example, comment, flowers/eggs (thumb-up/down) are all about the interactions with friends, while the serves, calories, and other nutrition facts should be put in one area.
Picture
2. More Tutorials in their first use

When users first time see this page, they may not know what they should do and may ignore adjusting the serves. So I add a tutorial to instruct them how to do the food journal.
